Diagnostic Breast MRI – AI powered MRI- Most Advanced Diagnostic Imaging in Montreal
A breast MRI provides the most detailed and comprehensive view of breast tissue available in medical imaging. It offers far greater clarity than a mammogram or ultrasound, helping radiologists identify and evaluate even subtle abnormalities that your physician may have noted. This exam plays a vital role in early detection and precise assessment of breast conditions, ensuring the highest standard of care for every patient.
At IRM Sud Ouest Montreal, we use the latest AI-powered MRI technology, delivering faster image acquisition and the most precise diagnostic results available today. Artificial intelligence assists our radiologists by enhancing image quality, detecting subtle changes, and supporting highly accurate interpretations, all of which lead to earlier and more confident diagnoses.
What Is a Diagnostic Breast MRI?
Breast cancer is the most common cancer affecting Canadian women after non-melanoma skin cancer. While rare in men, it can develop in the mammary gland cells and may extend to nearby regions such as the underarm, collarbone, or chest wall.
A diagnostic breast MRI is often recommended for women at increased risk of breast cancer or when traditional imaging results are inconclusive. It can also be used to assess breast implants or investigate a suspected rupture—often without the need for contrast injection.
When a Breast MRI Is Recommended
Your physician may refer you for a breast MRI to:
• Measure the size and spread of a known breast cancer before surgery
• Evaluate the extent of a diagnosed breast cancer
• Screen patients at high genetic or familial risk
• Monitor recovery or detect recurrence after breast cancer treatment
• Assist surgeons in preoperative planning
• Assess response to chemotherapy, hormone therapy, or surgery
• Detect local recurrence or spread to nearby lymph nodes
• Examine possible implant rupture or complications
• Support follow-up care for patients with breast implants
AI-Powered Precision and Contrast Enhancement
Our AI-enhanced MRI systems use deep-learning algorithms to refine every image for exceptional sharpness and detail. When combined with a gadolinium contrast agent, this technology provides radiologists with unmatched insight into tissue structure and vascularization.
Benefits include:
• Enhanced detection of small tumors and subtle abnormalities
• Clearer distinction between healthy and abnormal tissue
• Improved visualization of blood flow and tumor activity
• Sharper, faster imaging for more confident clinical decisions
How the Procedure Works
During the scan, you’ll lie face down on a cushioned table designed specifically for breast imaging. The table allows each breast to be comfortably positioned for optimal imaging quality. The scan is performed feet-first, and you’ll be given headphones to reduce noise.
If a contrast agent is used, it will be administered during the exam.
The procedure typically lasts between 30 and 50 minutes, including preparation and injection.
Insurance and Coverage
This examination is not covered by RAMQ, but most private insurance plans reimburse part or all of the cost. Our clinic also accepts referrals and claims from CSST and SAAQ.
Patient Preparation
• Do not apply deodorant or antiperspirant before your exam
• Bring all previous imaging and reports for comparison
• Avoid eating or drinking for 3 hours prior to your appointment
